As you may recall, the PS5 created quite a stir with its design when it first launched: however, over the years, its design has gradually become more accepted. This acceptance has been further solidified with the release of the PS5 Slim. For those wavering between these two devices, here are some details that might help.
PS5 vs. PS5 Slim: A Small Increase in Storage
Unlike mid-term updates like the PS4 Pro, the PS5 Slim is not just an additional option to the existing model but is set to replace it entirely.
The Slim model does not offer an upgrade in core features like the processor or RAM, but there is a small increase in storage capacity. The original PS5 has 825 GB of internal storage, while the PS5 Slim increases this to a full 1 TB.
The most significant difference between the PS5 and PS5 Slim is their size. The original PS5 was one of the largest consoles ever made, so even a slight reduction in size is a notable advantage.
Model | Height | Depth | Width |
---|---|---|---|
PS5 (Disc) | 390 mm | 260 mm | 104 mm |
PS5 (Digital) | 390 mm | 260 mm | 92 mm |
PS5 Slim (Disc) | 358 mm | 216 mm | 96 mm |
PS5 Slim (Digital) | 358 mm | 216 mm | 80 mm |
As seen in the table above, if you prefer your PS5 to take up less space and have a more compact form factor, and you do not need physical media, the PS5 Slim (Digital) version seems like the most logical choice. The absence of the Blu-Ray drive has allowed the device to achieve its long-awaited physical form.
Apart from size and price, there are a few other minor changes. The cover panels are now divided into four parts instead of two. The disc drive makes the Sony PS5 Slim more unstable than the original, so an additional accessory is needed to use the console in a horizontal position.
For those wanting to use it vertically, the vertical stand is now sold separately for $30. In Turkey, this stand is currently priced around 1400 TL.
Should You Switch from PS5 to PS5 Slim?
Given the current conditions, there is no urgent need to switch from PS5 to PS5 Slim. However, since the device is set to replace the PS5 in the long term, waiting a while before purchasing a new console might be more economical.
